En route from New York to New Orleans, the SS Republic sank in a hurricane off the coast of Georgia in 1865. In 2003, she was rediscovered by Odyssey Marine Exploration, and with the search and recovery of the ship the subject of the National Geographic Society documentary Civil War Gold.
