CILICIA, Tarsus. Gordian III. AD 238-244. Æ (36.5mm, 19.06 g, 7h). Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Two concentric Ciliarch crowns set on table. SNG BN 1650 (same dies); SNG Levante 1135 (same dies). Dark green patina with some light earthen highlights/deposits, roughness. Near VF.

Ex Triskeles Auction 20 (30 June 2017), lot 465.

Such crowns were worn by the Ciliarch or Cilicarch, the High Priest of Cilicia who presided over provincial temples dedicated to certain emperors. The different busts that decorate these crowns represent the various emperors who were honored with temples throughout the region.
