SCOTLAND. David I. 1124-1153. AR Penny (21mm, 1.35 g, 1h). Quadrilateral on Cross Fleurée type of Henry I. Phase A. Carlisle mint; Erebald, moneyer. Struck 1136-early 1140s. + DAVI[T REX], crowned bust left; lis-tipped scepter to left / + EREBALD [: ON : CAR]D :, quadrilateral with incurved sides and fleurs at limbs; all over cross fleurée. Mattinson & Cherry group A, fig. 3 (same dies); PAS SWYOR-A6B618 = EMC 2012.0162 (this coin); Burns –; SCBI 35 (Ashmolean & Hunterian) –; SCBC 5001. Crease, some porosity. Fine. Extremely rare. The first Scottish coin.
