MYSIA, Kyzikos. Circa 550-450 BC. AR (7.5mm, 0.62 g). Head of ketos right; below, tunny left / Incuse square. CNG E-141, lot 68 = Peus 376, lot 388 = Künker 20, lot 162; Naumann 75, lot 233; Savoca 21, lot 170; otherwise, unpublished. Toned, granular surfaces. Good Fine.
Previous sales tentatively attributed this issue to Phokaia predicated upon the attribution in the Peus 376 sale, where type was described as a head of a griffin or ketos above a seal left. However, more recent examples have clarified the lower element as being a tunny, rather than a seal, and the head is definitely that of a ketos. A parallel in electrum is known at Kyzikos, von Fritze type 52, which displays a full ketos left with a tunny left above. Other early Kyzikene silver fractions are known to have been struck in the same period as that electrum issue, so it would be reasonable to assume the present issue belongs among those.
