MYSIA, Kisthene. Circa 350-340 BC. AR Hemiobol (7mm, 0.34 g, 10h). Two female heads, left and right, their faces overlapping / Crowned head (of Artaxerxes III?) left; KIΣ downward to left. Brindley 470 = Winzer 3.5 (Cilicia, uncertain mint); otherwise, unpublished in the standard references. Find patina, off center on obverse. VF. Extremely rare.

Ex Roma E-Sale 81 (25 February 2021), lot 569.

On the handful of these known, the legend on the obverse is not legible. Brindley assumed his example had an Aramaic inscription, but here is clearly reads, in Greek letters, KIΣ. In addition to this abbreviated ethnic that appears on civic coins of Kisthene, the types on their coinage were Persian-influenced, with the mint’s earliest issues being that of the Persian satrap Orontes.
