UNCERTAIN TRIBES, East Germanic or Sarmatian Tribes. 3rd-5th centuries. AR Denarius (16mm, 2.95 g, 6h). Imitating an issue of Commodus. Uncertain mint between southern Poland and the Dnieper basin. Laureate head right / Fides standing right, holding grain ears and plate of fruit. Cf. Anokhin, Counterfeiting suppl. 1171 (same rev. die). Toned, deposits, edge splits. VF. Imitations of the Fides type are rare in this series.
Eastern Europe was host to several fascinating series of imitative issues from the 3rd-6th centuries AD. Among these are a large series of imitative denarii and aurei, both plated and in solid precious metal, that are found in the territories of modern Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus. Though often categorized as the earliest Gothic coinage, these types should be more broadly attributed to the Chernyakhov culture, a multiethnic archaeological culture including Geto-Dacian, Sarmatian, and Gothic tribes. Imitations from this area are related to but distinct from the earliest coins of the imitative series from the Taman peninsula. For further examples, see: http://barbarous-imitations.narod.ru/
