Allectus. Romano-British Emperor, AD 293-296. Quinarius (18mm, 2.73 g, 6h). ‘C’ mint. Struck circa AD 294-295/6. Radiate and cuirassed bust right / Galley right, with cabin, mast, and seven crew; no waves; QC. RIC V.5 568; cf. CHRB III, 20567 (possibly this coin). Dark brown patina with some trace verdigris. VF.

From Dr. R. Craig Kammerer Collection. Reportedly ex Blackmoor, Selborne, October 1873 Hoard (IRBCH 914).

This coin reports to be from the 1873 Blackmoor Hoard via purchase from “Seeger.” In Dr. Bland and Norman Shiel’s catalog of the hoard, there is one coin of this type that matches the dimensions of this coin perfectly, number 20567 on p. 80. Unfortunately, the coin is not plated there, nor are those of this type that were sold in large lots by Christie’s in their sale of most of the hoard on 9 December 1975. Finally, the coin, being a common type, is not recorded in the highlights from the hoard that was cataloged originally by the 4th Lord Selborne in 1887. As such, the pedigree is officially unverifiable as of now but most likely is indeed ex Blackmoor.
