COMMAGENE , Zeugma. Marcus Aurelius. AD 161-180. Æ (23mm, 9.32 g, 12h). 4th officina. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust left, seen from behind / ZЄYΓM ATЄωN Δ (officina) in three lines within laurel wreath. RPC IV.3 8004; Butcher 26a. Repatinated brown surfaces, light roughness. Near VF.
Butcher comments that the dies for this series, for both Marcus Aurlius and Lucius Verus, were the work of the same engravers as at Samosata. Interestingly, many of the larger denomination bronzes are believed to have been struck at Antioch, as well as the tetradrachms. Antioch was likely a hub for several of its neighboring cities as it shares obverse dies with Samosata, Seleucia Pieria, and Zeugma. It is likely that Zeugma did not have a mint of its own.
