PERSIA, Achaemenid Empire. Uncertain satrap. Circa 420-375 BC. Æ (13mm, 1.75 g, 6h). Uncertain mint in western Asia Minor. Bearded head right, wearing satrapal headdress / Persian king or hero, wearing kidaris and kandys, quiver over shoulder, in kneeling-running stance right, holding spear and bow; BA to left, linear device to inner right. Bodzek pl. IX, 8 var. (three pellets, not linear device; Ionia); Winzer 10.1 var. (same; Tiribazos, Sardes mint); Cahn, Tissaphernes 9 var. (no symbol; Tissaphernes). Dark green-brown patina, some roughness, slightly off center on reverse. VF. Unpublished with this linear symbol, only one in CoinArchives (Savoca 13, lot 199).

The attribution of this type as generally been give to Tissaphernes, but none of those issues had the linear symbol present here. Such symbols may be associated with Persian royal families, and this particular symbol is found on coins in the name of the satrap Spithradates, as well as the early Tarsian coins thought to have been struck under Syennesis.
