Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. AR Denarius (16mm, 2.75 g, 12h). ‘Old style’. Laodicea ad Mare mint. Struck AD 193(?). L SEPT SEV PE RET AVG IMP, laureate head right / M ONET AVG, Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopia. Cf. RIC IV 460b; cf. BMCRE p. 109 *; cf. RSC 331a (all for obv. legend ending in IMP II, AD 194). Light golden toning. VF. Extremely rare variety apparently lacking the II at the end of the obverse legend.

Both RIC and BMCRE note that legends ending in IMP or IMP I are doubtful. It is possible that many coins described have the II either off the flan or erroneously left off the die.
