EGYPT, Alexandria. Trajan. AD 98-117. Æ Drachm (35mm, 24.50 g, 12h). Dated RY 13 (AD 109/10). Laureate bust right, aegis on left shoulder / Harpocrates of Mendes seated left, holding scepter and club; at either side of throne, ram standing left; L IΓ (date) across field. Köln –; Dattari (Savio) –; K&G –; RPC III 4399 var. (bust); Emmett –. Red-brown surfaces, reverse flan flaws, some roughness. Near VF. Extremely rare with a unique obverse variety.

The obverse of RPC III 4399 is described as having an “uncertain laureate bust of Trajan, right”. The present coin shows no signs of drapery and the serpents of the aegis are clear. This coin shares an obverse with a similar Harpocrates of Canopus type, RPC III 4396.2.
