On 25 May 1798, the garrison in the small town of Hacketstown in the southwest of County Carlow was assaulted by a motley crew of United Irishmen rebels. The group was quickly repulsed, but a more significant rebel force would return a month later, forcing the garrison to evacuate to nearby Tullow. This unique handmade medal was likely produced in the intervening month between the battles, most likely presented to one of the soldiers of the garrison.
