Grierson, Coins of Medieval Europe 278; Lucas 39; Chalon 19 var. (knight left); Den Duyts 273 var. (obv. legend). Toned. Good VF.

While the heavier Gros Tournois of St. Louis IX was finding its place in much of European trade, the petit gros came from local wool merchants use of the sterling when dealing with their English counterparts and the need for a larger denomination.
