POTTERY. Magna Graecia. 6th-4th Cent. BCE. (75 mm wide x 165 mm tall). A Gnathian lekanthis of fine style, with a squat, round foot supporting a tear shaped body that extends into a split in the neck, with a long spout coming out front, and a high handle that extends above the spout and then comes back to attach to the body. On the forepart of the vessel, several registers of designs are present polychromatically. From top to bottom, two small registers of U-shaped designs with dots in lower field and a row of S shaped designs. Below, a larger register of flower shaped designs surrounded by dots, followed by another row of U-shaped designs in the lower field. The largest segment follows, of a large design of grapevines, with fruit and leaves extending from either side. The piece terminates the design with a row of U-shaped designs with dots. Virtually as made. Tiny chip on foot, otherwise intact. |
