Theodora. Died before AD 337. Æ (14mm, 1.33 g, 7h). Contemporary imitation of Treveri (Trier) mint, 2nd officina. Struck circa AD 337-340. FL MAX TH EODORAE [AVG?], diademed (laureate?) and draped bust right / PA X PV BLICA, Pax standing front, head left, holding branch and transverse scepter; TRS. Cf. RIC VIII 79/78 (obv./rev.). Glossy brown patina. EF. An unrecorded mule combining an obverse of Theodora with a reverse of Helena.

From the John L. Cowan Collection, purchased from Degussa Numismatik, 2018.

This unusual mule is probably imitative, although the engraving is only slightly crude and the legends appear to be correct if slightly malformed and somewhat unorthodox: the obverse legend break is normally found between the letters O and D of THEODORAE instead of between the H and E as here, and it is also questionable if the obverse legend simply ends at THEODORAE or if the title AVG, which should follow, follows. Additionally, the crown worn by Theodora should be a laurel wreath. It is, however, stylistically quite different than what is typically seen (a double row of leaves), and thus it is unclear whether here it is meant to represent an ornate diadem or a laurel wreath. The normal reverse legend and type for Theodora is PIETAS ROMANA with Pietas depicted standing facing, holding an infant to her breast. The Pax reverse seen here is the type normally found on concurrent issues of Helena.
