150, Lot: 281. Estimate $500.
Sold for $725. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Majorian. AD 457-461. Æ 12mm (1.44 g). Rome mint? DN MAIOR....., diademed and draped bust right / Victory walking left, holding wreath and palm; T in left field, R[M] in exergue. RIC X -; cf. LRBC 869. VF, brown patina. Very rare.

Kent does not accept LRBC’s tentative attribution of bronze coins of Majorian to the mint at Rome. LRBC 869 does not have an officina mark in the field, but earlier issues of Valentinian III do (cf. RIC X 2118; LRBC 845). It is possible that Majorian was using an old reverse die of Valentinian III for his Rome mint issues.
