SELEUKID KINGS of SYRIA. Seleukos I Nikator. 312-280 BC. AR Drachm (16mm, 3.08 g, 3h). Aï Khanoum mint. Struck after 285 BC. Laureate head of Zeus right /
BASILEWS SELEUKOU in exergue; Athena Promachos in biga drawn by horned elephants;
D in circle above. SC 277 var. (control mark not recorded). VF, toned. Apparently an unrecorded variety.
This control was added to the later joint-reign issues of Seleukos I and Antiochos I (cf. SC 280-283). This may be a transitional issue between the issues in Seleukos' name only and the joint-reign issues. Nonetheless, the die axis of 3h is unusual for Aï Khanoum and suggests this coin may be an imitation.
