CELTIC, Britain. Cantiaci. Circa 45-40 BC. AV Quarter Stater (1.33 gm). Yoke Sunflower Type. Plain obverse / Horse left with beaded mane, yoke above, pellets and ringed-pellets around, sunflower below. Hobbs -; Van Arsdell -; SCBC -; NumCirc (December 1994), no. 7783. Good VF, pinkish gold. Extremely rare, only three others recorded, two of them without a findspot. ($1500)

Found Canterbury, Kent.

Ambiguity is the very essence of Celtic coin imagery. The yoke-shaped ornament may be perceived in at least three different ways: as a yoke, as a stylized face, or as male genitalia. The only other provenanced example of this extraordinarily rare quarter stater was found at Canterbury.
