LESBOS, Antissa(?). Circa 500-450 BC. Billon Obol (9mm, 0.87 gm). Head of an African left / Human eye with A and pellet, all in linear incuse square. Babelon, Traité 599 (pl. XV, 9). Near VF. Rare ethnic depiction on an ancient coin.

The billon fractions of Lesbos are usually attributed to Mytilene, the chief city on the island. This variety, the only type with a legend, may support an alternate attribution of the series to Antissa on the western coast of Lesbos.
