CILICIA, Tarsus. Maximinus I. 235-238 AD. Æ 37mm (22.64 gm). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Dionysus and Ariadne in a cart drawn by two centaurs, one holding a lyre. SNG Levante 1104 (this coin). Near VF, variegated green patina. Rare mythological scene. ($300) Ariadne, the daughter of Minos of Crete, provided the thread that allowed Theseus to navigate his way out of the Labyrinth after slaying the Minotaur. The ungrateful hero later abandoned Ariadne on the island of Naxos, where Dionysus found her and took her as his consort.
