OCTAVIAN and MARK ANTONY. 40-39 BC. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.81 gm). Italian mint. Bare head of Mark Antony right / Winged caduceus. Crawford 529/3; CRI 303; Sydenham 1328; RSC 5 (Mark Antony). Toned, near VF, rim bruises.

This denarius commemorates the formation of the Second Triumvirate. While the majority of such issues show heads of both Triumvirs, this one lacks that of Octavian. As this was minted in an area still held by Antony, and with Octavian still very much a junior partner at this stage, it seemed better to defer and exclude Octavian's own portrait, though this name on the reverse legend makes his presence known.
