First Issue of Macrinus from Edessa

447, Lot: 390. Estimate $150.
Sold for $170. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

MESOPOTAMIA, Edessa. Macrinus. AD 217-218. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 13.16 g, 12h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Eagle standing facing, head and tail right, with wings spread, holding wreath in beak; between legs, shrine with pediment. Prieur 852. Toned. Good VF.

From the Michel Prieur Collection. Ex Ceresio 2 (26 September 1988), lot 223.

Prieur states in his book: “The portrait of Macrinus resembles that of Caracalla, and was presumably made before the official imago of the emperor was available. It is probably, therefore, the first issue of Macrinus from this mint.”
