ANGLO-SAXON, Anglo-Viking (Hiberno-Norse Northumbria). Eric Bloodaxe. Second reign, 952-954. AR Penny (21mm, 0.93 g, 7h). Sword type. York mint; Radulf, moneyer. ·: ERIC / A REX[...] REX in two lines; between, sword right and triple-pellets; triple-pellets above [and below] / [+ ·] RA•DVLF MON[Γ ·], cross pattée, pellets in quarters. EMC 2007.0059 (this coin, unillustrated but of matching weight and described as a “large fragment”); CTCE Group XI, o-q; SCBI 6 (Edinburgh), 80; BMC –; North 550; SCBC 1030. VF, minor porosity, edge loss, chipped. Extremely rare – only the third sword penny of Eric Bloodaxe to be offered at public auction since 1955 (the others: Triton XX, lot 1519, hammer $130,000, and Williams II lot 239, hammer £25000).
