IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. EL Forty-eighth Stater (5mm, 0.28 g). Lydo-Milesian standard(?). Head of lion right / Quadripartite incuse square. Unpublished in the standard references. VF.
The types here are fairly ubiquitous among early electrum coins, but the style of the obverse does not closely match the published examples, and well-formed quadripartite reverse as here is also unknown with a lion head obverse of this style. Weidauer 124–5 are similar, but the lion head is in schematic form, and the quadripartite incuse is more crudely formed. Perhaps this is an unknown later issue from the same mint?
