KINGS of MACEDON. Antigonos II Gonatas. 277/6-239 BC. Æ Unit (18.5mm, 4.33 g, 8h). Uncertain mint in Macedon. Helmeted head of Athena right / Pan right, erecting trophy to right; B-A across upper field, monogram of Antigonos between legs, Macedonian helmet to outer left, wreath to outer right. Furtwängler, Beobachtungen, Group 18 (Antigonos III Doson); HGC 3, 1049. VF, hard dark green patina.

From the Belgica Collection. Ex G. Hirsch 249 (7 February 2007), lot 1327.

The Athena/Pan bronzes are traditionally attributed to Antigonos II Gonatas, but more recent hoard and find data strongly suggest that while this coinage began under that king, it was likely continued by his successors, Demetrios II and Antigonos III Doson. Furtwängler’s study of this period places the present issue under Antigonos Doson.
