412, Lot: 74. Estimate $100.
Sold for $120. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

MACEDON, Potidaia. Circa 450-432 BC. AR Obol or Tritemorion (6.5mm, 0.36 g, 9h). Horse standing right / Archaic head of female right within incuse square. Alexander Period IIB, b.1; HGC 3, 649. VF, lightly toned, a little off center, granular surfaces, die break on reverse. Very rare.

From the AG Collection.

The theoretical weight standard of 0.70 for this issue listed in HGC appears to be too high. The two examples cited by Alexander are both 0.49 grams, and the four pieces in CoinArchives range from 0.45-0.51 grams. The low weight of the present piece is likely due to the natural metal loss that resulted in the visibly granular surfaces.
