From the Simon Coupland Collection, purchased from ebaY France, December 2012.

Charles the Bald's temple coinage from Sens is well understood as a result of the discovery near Bray-sur-Seine (Seine-et-Marne) of a hoard including nearly 60 such coins (it was published in the Numismatic Chronicle in 2012). This coin is not from that hoard, nor was it struck from the same dies as any of the coins found at Bray, but it is a fine example of the standard type, with a full royal title, REXFR, and a regular temple with a double roof line. At a time when many mints were using poorly cut dies and the quality of coins from Sens varied, the legends are proficiently engraved with punches, and the temple is neat and square. The low weight is typical of this period of Charles' reign, before the king restored the weight standard in his coinage reform of 864. [S. Coupland]
