From the Simon Coupland Collection, purchased from ebay France, December 2012. Reportedly purchased from an auction house in Lyon.

It is above all the stylistic similarity to the distinctive mint-signed coinage from Auxerre produced by Charles the Bald which permits the attribution of this group of coins of Louis the Pious to the Auxerre mint (Group K). The group was described in Numismatic Chronicle 172 (2012), pp. 317-18. The legends were formed from broad and chunky lettering, crudely executed, particularly the letters T, A and I, with marked serifs on the Vs. The temple fills the reverse field, with a low roof and a distinct central cross. A remarkable reverse die triplet revealed that the obverse cross could vary from large to medium to small, as on this coin. [S. Coupland]
