SICILY, Syracuse. Hiketas. 287-278 BC. Æ 23mm (9.67 gm). SURAKOSIWN, laureate head of Zeus Hellanios left; palladium behind / SURAKOSIWN, eagle standing left on thunderbolt; star left. Cf. Calciati II pg. 304, 157; cf. SNG ANS 810; cf. SNG Copenhagen 785; cf. SNG Morcom 785; cf. Favorito 50; cf. Laffaille 245; cf. Virzi 1760; SNG Munich 1311 (?). EF, dark brown patina with traces of green and red. Very rare variety with SURAKOSIWN on the obverse rather than the usuual DIOS ELLANIOU.

From the David Freedman Collection.

Although not recorded as such, it appears from the photo of SNG Munich 1311 that the legend starts SU rather than DI. The rest of the legend is off the flan. Nevertheless it is similar to our piece in style, and it also has the palladium on the obverse.
