ARKADIA, Tegea. Circa 50-25 BC. Æ Hemiobol or Hexachalkon (22mm, 6.39 g, 12h). Head of Aleos right, wearing tainia / Kepheos standing right, holding spear and shield and extending hand to Athena standing left, holding spear and lock of Medusa’s hair; between them stands Sterope, holding vessel to receive lock; two monograms in field. BCD Peloponnesos 1749; HGC 5, 1056. Near VF, green patina, light earthen deposits. Interesting type.

Aleos was the mythical founder of Alea and the king of Tegea. Athena presented a lock of Medusa’s hair to Aleos so that Tegea, the home of a major sanctuary of Athena, would be rendered unconquerable.
