Anonymous. 206-195 BC. Æ Semis (22mm, 9.99 g, 2h). CA anonymous as, emergency issue. Canusium mint. Laureate head of Saturn right; S behind / Prow of galley right; S above, ROMA below. Crawford 100/2 var. (see note below); Sydenham 309b var. (same); Type not in RBW, but cf. RBW 425, also an emergency issue, but in a style associated with the P series; McCabe Group F2, F2.Sm.3 (same dies). Good VF, green patina with touches of red, some light smoothing. Very rare.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex Artemide Aste 7E (17 April 2011), lot 7233.

100/2 variant CA anonymous as, emergency issue, not in Crawford. This coin is the semis related to the previous coin, of the P and CA issue, but in the case of this coin the style relates more evidently to the CA rather than P series (i.e. contra the previous coin, I do not as yet know a semis with P mintmark in this exact style). Cf. Andrew McCabe, “The Roman Bronze Coinage struck in Apulia and South East Italy in the Second Punic War,” in Proceedings XV International Numismatic Congress Taormina 2015, forthcoming. McCabe (Essays Russo, 2013) pp. 153-157, type F2, cf. coin F2.Sm.3 from the same die pair. [A. McCabe]
