Sold for $65. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

NABATAEA. Syllaios. Usurper, 9-6 BC. Æ (14mm, 1.84 g, 12h). Diademed head of Obodas III right / Crossed cornucopias; Aramaic Š and Ḥ flanking. Meshorer, Nabataea 42 var. (see below), otherwise unpublished. VF, dark green patina, obverse a little off center. Very rare, not to be confused with the more common Aretas IV issue with laureate bust on the obverse.

Meshorer’s no. 42 is a problematic entry. His text indicates a single letter Š in the field on the reverse, and refers to three examples. Apparently, he did not consider the location of the letter, as the ANS coin he refers to has the letter between the cornucopias, while his plate coin has it in the left field. The problem is that his plate coin is off-center such that the right field is not visible. Thus, that coin may have the letter on the right, as the present coin.
