Very Rare Depiction of Harpokrates Seated on a Lotus

EGYPT, Alexandria. Hadrian. AD 117-138. Æ Drachm (33mm, 21.74 g, 12h). Dated RY 19 (AD 134/5). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Harpokrates, nude but for decorated collar and crown of disk and horns, squatting left on lotus flower with bud, his right hand raised to his mouth, holding lotus with his left arm; L ЄNN-ЄAKΔ (date) around. Köln –; Dattari (Savio) 1725 & 7662; K&G 32.655; Emmett 975.19 (R5) = Dattari 1725. Good Fine, green and brown patina with touches of red, some deposits. Very rare.


From a Hungarian Collection formed primarily in the 1930s.

A very rare type, with the only other example we have seen being the Wetterstrom specimen (CNA XIII, 1990, lot 68), which is the piece used to illustrate K&G 32.655. The Wetterstrom example (a nice VF) realized $1540 on a $350 estimate, one of the highlights of the collection.
