Special issues. Q. Oppius. 46 BC. Æ (27mm, 13.39 g, 12h). Uncertain mint. Diademed head of Venus right; capricorn behind / Victory advancing left, head right, holding palm frond and plate of fruit. Crawford 550/2d; CRI 507; Sydenham 1277a; RBW 1858; RPC I 602. Good Fine, brown patina, roughness. Rare.

From the RBW Collection. Ex John Work Garrett Collection (Part III, Leu/Numismatic Fine Arts, 29 March 1985), lot 394 (part of).

The dating and location of the mint for this issue remains conjectural. Crawford assigns the coinage to Cilicia in 88 BC, Sydenham calls them Syrian issues of the late triumval period, and the authors of RPC assign them to an uncertain Italian mint circa 45 BC. Most recently, Andrew McCabe favored the Rome mint in the RBW catalog.
