Artemis with the Features of Kleopatra

358, Lot: 152. Estimate $150.
Sold for $210. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

KINGS of GALATIA. Amyntas. 36-25 BC. Æ (19.5mm, 5.33 g, 12h). Uncertain mint in Galatia, Pisidia, or Lykaonia. Draped bust of Artemis right, bow and quiver over shoulder / Stag standing right. HGC 7, 784; RPC I 3503. VF, dark green patina, some marks, spots of encrustation on reverse.

In 37/6 BC, Antony awarded Galatia to Amyntas, who continued to rule until his death in 25 BC. Artemis’ features here resemble those of Kleopatra VII of Egypt, possibly as a sign of deference to Antony and the Egyptian queen.
