Following James' forced exile from England, his royal Catholic counterpart in France, Louis XIV, received him along with his family–Mary, the Queen consort, and James, the Prince of Wales. His supporters in England attempted to assassinate William in 1696, their failure ultimately reducing the support for his cause. The following year, Louis made peace with William, undermining James’ attempts to regain the throne.
