In the early 10th century, the Kings of Wessex collected a tax known as the Romescot, or Peter’s Pence. Collected annually on St. Peter’s day, this tax was sent directly to the Church in Rome. This practice has resulted in a number of Anglo-Saxon coin hoards being found in the city, which was otherwise greatly removed from the general circulation area for English pennies.
