The Caesarians. Julius Caesar. January-April 46 BC. AR Denarius (16mm, 3.41 g, 12h). Utica(?) mint. Head of Ceres right, wearing wreath of grain ears / Emblems of the augurate and pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, guttus, and lituus; M (
munus = gift) to right. Crawford 467/1b; CRI 57a; Sydenham 1024; RSC 4. Fine, lightly toned, porosity, bankers’ marks, a few scratches.
A parallel issue carries a “D” (donativum = largess) in place of the “M”. Both were struck as payment to Caesar’s veterans.
