PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy VI Philometor. First sole reign, 180-170 BC. Æ Trihemiobol (29mm, 21.56 g, 11h). Cypriot mint. Head of Zeus-Ammon right, wearing tainia / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; scepter over wing, lotus to left, [E]YΛ between legs. Svoronos 1396; Lorber, Lotus VI.2; SNG Copenhagen 293. Near VF, green and brown patina, roughness.

From the Continental Collection.

While the long standing belief that the “EYΛ” stood for Eulaios, regent for the young Ptolemy VI from circa 176-170 BC, is no longer thought to be true, Seleukid countermarks on some of the “EYΛ” series demonstrated they were in circulation prior to the Seleukid invasions of 169-168 BC.
