CENTRAL ITALY, Uncertain. Mid-late 1st century BC. Æ (18mm, 8.45 g, 1h). Wreathed head of young Dionysus right / Panther standing right, head facing, holding thrysus(?) in jaws; crescent above. HN Italy 2669; SNG Milano II, p. 80, 10. VF, dark brown patina. Rare.

From the Continental Collection.

This issue is known from finds throughout Italy and Sicily, and a few examples were overstruck on issues of M. Oppius Capito, Mark Antony’s naval prefect, circa 39-35 BC (see M. Crawford, “Provenances, Attributions and Chronology of some Early Italian Coinages” in CH IX, p. 274). Although almost certainly related to the Roman Civil War, the exact mint or issuers are unknown.
