RUSSIA, Empire. Nikolai I Pavlovich. 1825-1855. AR Cliché Medal Decoration (101mm, 62.80 g). Obverse of the Issue Commemorating the Opening of the Памятник Николаю I in 1859. Cliché consisting of cast of obverse of medallion with helmeted and cuirassed bust of Nikolai I left, helmet decorated with crowned double-headed imperial eagle; legend around citing Nokolai as emperor and autocrat of all Russia, as well as full dates of birth and death; all within elaborate frame of ogee and rope designs and laurel wreath / Back is repousée and filled as originally constructed with cardboard and green felt backing for additional protection; partial setting for suspension remains, now filled with small blue glass cabachon. Cf. Diakov 681.1 (for original medal). Fine, toned, originally chased and polished. Interesting decorative commemorative of one of Russia’s greatest tsars.
