SICILY, Syracuse. Æ Repoussé plaque (50mm, 16.41 g). By Victor Canale, circa 1920s. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ, head of Kore-Persephone to left, her hair bound in a wreath of reeds, wearing a pearl necklace and a triple-pendant earring; four dolphins around; to lower left, V. CANALE / Incuse of obverse. EF, as made, minor discolorations and deposits. A handsome replica of a Syracusan dekadrachm in the style of Euainetos.

Victor Canale purchased the medal manufacturing business located at 37 quai de I'Horloge, Paris, in 1912, which was started by C. Durant in 1827. This business subsequently passed to Auguste Godard before Canale’s assumption in 1912. Both Godard and Canale first made their names by manufacturing medals by Oscar Roty. Canale soon extended the scope of the company by publishing medals for Dropsy, Desvignes, Schwab and others before the outbreak of World War I, and by the mid-1920s, he was responsible for a wide range of issues by the French medallists of the day.
