Commodus. AD 177-192. Æ Sestertius (28mm, 20.55 g, 12h). Rome mint. Struck AD 184. Laureate head right / Victory seated right on rock, cradling palm frond in right arm, placing left hand on shield set on knee; two shields on ground behind. Cf. RIC III 440; MIR 18, 653-6/30; Banti 486. Near VF, brown patina.


During the reign of Commodus, a serious revolt erupted in Britain in AD 184, the causes of which are uncertain. The revolt was quickly put down and a series of coins was struck to commemorate the event.
