SICILY, Katane. Circa 461-450 BC. AR Litra (11mm, 0.74 g, 1h). Head of Silenos left / Winged thunderbolt; two shields flanking. Boehringer, Kataneische, Series I, Li 2; Mirone 21; Rizzo pl. IX, 16; Jameson 536; De Hirsch 334; HGC 2, 588. Good VF, find patina, surface roughness. Fine style.


An example of this coin, struck from the same dies, was previously sold in Leu Numismatics Auction 81 (16 May 2001), lot 60, where the cataloguer stated “The magnificent head of Silenos on this coin is from the hand of the Master of the Brussels Aitna tetradrachm.”
