320, Lot: 223. Estimate $200.
Sold for $425. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

PHOENICIA, Tyre. 126/5 BC-AD 65/6. AR Shekel (24mm, 14.26 g, 12h). Uncertain date. Laureate bust of Melkart right / Eagle standing left on prow, with palm frond over shoulder; to left, date above [club]; to right, KP(?) above monogram; [?] between legs. DCA 919 or 920; HGC 10, 357. VF, lightly toned. Good metal.

The engraving of the legends, dates, and monograms is quite crude, with large pellets outlining the principal points of the letters/controls. Indeed, some pellets do not form a part of any letters/controls, suggesting that they were not fully engraved. This cataloguer initially read the date as P/IA (year 111), but the KP control to the right (if that is what is found on our coin) does not appear until year 113.
