Extremely Rare Theodoseia Chalkous

316, Lot: 104. Estimate $300.
Sold for $340. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS, Theodoseia. Circa 385-380 BC. Æ Chalkous (12mm, 1.24 g, 11h). Head of female left / Forepart of bull left. Frolova, frühe, Type VII, 13; Kovalenko & Molchanov 2/11-3; Sidorenko & Shonov 25; Anokhin 941; MacDonald –; SNG BM Black Sea –; SNG Stancomb –; HGC 7, 186. Fine, black patina, a layer of green deposits on reverse. Perhaps only the seventh known.

The only other example of this type that we handled (CNG 84, lot 571 = HGC 7, 186 plate coin) realized $1500, despite being severely tooled and smoothed. The current coin is probably from the same obverse die as the Pushkin piece (Frolova 13 = Kovalenko & Molchanov 2/11).
