Manuel I Comnenus. 1143-1180. Æ Aspron Trachy (25mm, 2.67 g, 6h). Constantinople mint. Struck 1167-1180(?). Christ Pantocrator entrhoned facing; stars flanking / Manuel standing facing, holding labarum and globus cruciger, being crowned by the Virgin Mary; eight jewels on Manuel’s collar. DOC 13 var. (number of jewels on collar); SB 1966. VF, green patina.

From the Iconodule Collection.

Sear notes: During this reign the silver content of the billon trachy was reduced to such an extent that most specimens have a purely copper appearance. This brought about a decline in its value in relation to the hyperpyron (originally 1/48), and by the close of the 12th century it had fallen to a mere 1/184 of the gold coin.
