Unpublished Rhodes Drachm

313, Lot: 72. Estimate $100.
Sold for $475. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

ISLANDS off CARIA, Rhodos. Rhodes. Circa 88/42 BC-AD 14. AR Drachm (18mm, 3.72 g, 3h). Demetrios, magistrate. Radiate head of Helios facing slightly right / Rose seen from above; ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ above, palm branch below. Ashton & Weiss –; HGC 6, 1456 (but magistrate unlisted). VF, toned. Unpublished.

Ashton and Weiss mention that the post-Plinthophoric drachms of Rhodes were rare before the late 19th century, but with several hoards having come to light during the past century our knowledge of the series has greatly expanded. It seems, however, that this magistrate is still unrecorded in the standard literature. Ashton and Weiss record the palm branch symbol occurring on only two varieties, one unsigned (nos. 85-110) and the other signed by the magistrate Epikrates (no. 302). In both these instances the palm branch is combined with a second symbol.
