KINGS of LYDIA. Alyattes. Circa 610-560 BC. EL Trite (13mm, 4.74 g). Sardes mint. Head of roaring lion right, “sun” on forehead; [W]ALWE[L] (in Lydian) downward on right / Two square punches. Cf. Weidauer Group XVII, 91–2 and 95 (different style); cf. SNG von Aulock 8204 (same); Pozzi 2472 (same). VF. Very rare.

From the Clearwater Collection.

Unlike the previous coin, which features a relatively refined style, the lion head on this example more closely resembles the schematized style found on the anepigraphic lion-head trites (cf. Weidauer Group XV, 59–75).
