CARIA, Stratonicaea. Caracalla, with Plautilla. AD 198-217. Æ (33mm, 14.84 g, 6h). Struck circa AD 202–203. Confronted busts of Caracalla right, laureate, draped, and cuirassed, and Plautilla left, draped; c/m’s: ΘЄOY within rectangular incuse and helmeted head of Athena right within oval incuse / Hekate standing left, holding patera and torch; to left, hound standing left, head right. Cf. SNG von Aulock 2693/2694 (for obv. die/rev. type); SNG Copenhagen –; SNG München –; SNG Tübingen –; SNG Keckman –; Karl –; for c/m’s: Howgego 536 and 83. VF, brown surfaces.

The obverse die used to strike this coin is undoubtedly by the same hand as an obverse die used to strike coins for Alinda (see Kraft pl. 60, 13–14 = SNG von Aulock 2412 and 2693). An obverse die match for the current coin was only found with the von Aulock specimen, which also has a poorly preserved obverse legend, so we cannot be certain if the legend refers to Plautilla as the “new goddess Hera” as does the die for Alinda. A reverse die match is also required to identify the magistrate.
